Chapter nine

Reclaiming the classroom from the shareholders

For the adults who still ask students what their work should mean.

To parents

You did not raise your child for eighteen years so that their conscience could be acquired along with their talent. Talk to them — not with fear, but with the questions on this site. Ask them what they want their work to mean. You may be the only person in their life still asking.

To teachers and professors

You entered this vocation to open minds, and you have watched the funding, the rankings, and the recruiters close them. You have more power than you think. One honest hour on the ethics of AGI, one reading assigned from outside the vendor consensus, one office-hours conversation about vocation instead of placement — these are seeds, and seeds are how forests happen.

To counselors and administrators

Measure your success not only by starting salaries but by what your graduates build. Invite dissenting voices to campus. Refuse gifts that come with silence attached. Publish your funding sources.

Be the institution students deserve, not the pipeline vendors demand.
